Setup SQL Explorer on Eclipse Helios using Microsoft SQL Server Drivers

If you wish to install SQL Explorer for Eclipse you can use their Eclipse update site at http://eclipsesql.sourceforge.net/ to get the latest version.

Next you’ll need to install the drivers to allow SQL Explorer talk to SQL server as they are not provided. However, follow these steps and you’ll be fine:

  1. Download the latest Microsoft SQL Server Drivers from here and install them – note the location!
  2. Bring up the SQL Explorer Perspective in Eclipse
  3. Click on the Connections tab
  4. Right-click to add New Connection Profile
  5. In the Driver dropdown you will only have the JDBC/ODBC Bridge listed so click Add/Edit Drivers
  6. You’ll get a Preferences window – expand the JDBC Drivers section
  7. The Microsoft MSSQL Server JDBC Driver should be marked with a red [x] – select it and click Edit
  8. Choose the Extra Class Path tab and click Add JARs
  9. From your prevoius driver install location {your_path}\sqljdbc_3.0\enu\ choose sqljdbc4.jar.
  10. The Driver Class Name should be automatically filled out as com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver.
  11. Click OK. The Microsoft MSSQL Server JDBC Driver should be marked with a tick – horray!
  12. Close that dialog and you should see the Microsoft MSSQL Server JDBC Driver in the dropdown – select this and you’ll have to fill out the URL for your local setup with the correct server name and port.

And that should be it – enjoy!

Missing a Step 9.5. Had to click on “List Drivers” to set up the Driver Class Name referred to in step 10. Otherwise install works as documented. Environment is XP SP3, SQL Explorer 3.6.1.v20120708-SR6 on Helios 3.6.2 (build M20110210-1200) connecting to MS SQLServer 2008 Management Studio SR 2 ( actually 10.0.4000.0 )

  4. Step 10 might not happen , just copy paste the name
